A few things to know before you import from China
1. Learn a few basic rules, e.g. how to present and receive business cards, how not to use your chopsticks, etc.
2. Communication is a challenge in the import business. When the Chinese nod their head it isn’t a sign they agree with you.
3. Losing face for the Chinese is unbearable. A few things to avoid in the import business are aggressiveness and rudeness.
4. Create a sense of friendship and reciprocity with your import partner. Traditionally, the system of "guanxi" - personal connections, remains the basis of all business, political, and social conduct in China. Without quanxi your import business will struggle.
5. Finally, try to learn a bit about Chinese history, art, and contemporary issues, without being judgmental about it. The Chinese are very proud of their country and appreciate a genuine interest in it.
